Simulations are extensively used in various thermal systems particularly in power plant industries to evaluate the output responses. The choice of optimal simulation parameters can lead to improve operation and time, but configuring them to produce maximum power output is a challenging problem. In power plants, there are so many parameters affects the performance of plant and need optimization. In this process Cycle Tempo 5.0 simulation software was used for optimization of critical steam extraction pressure parameters. The objective of the paper is to analyze Quasi-Newton optimization method for steady state optimum steam extraction pressures from high pressure and low pressure steam turbines that would offer the maximum thermal efficiency of a plant cycle. Eight stages of regenerative feed water heater arrangement with single reheater are considered for the analysis. The reheat temperature is 538 °C and heat input value of anthracite coal is kept at 28,938 KJ/Kg as constant in the simulation. The work has been carried for a subcritical, supercritical and ultra-supercritical coal based thermal power plant cycle by considering the same plant configuration. The energy absorbed by the steam generator is compared at different main steam inlet temperatures to turbine at 500, 600 and 700 °C for three power plant cycles. From the simulation study, it is observed that the specific coal consumption, steam consumption, auxiliary power consumption and heat transfer area in steam condenser reduces when higher steam input parameters are applied to the coal fired power plants. It was also compared the exergy efficiency of thermal systems both in theoretical and practical aspects point of view.
