Краткое описание

The study aims to capture the influence of tumor blood perfusion rate variability during temperature-controlled radiofrequency ablation (RFA) of breast tumor. A heterogeneous three-dimensional numerical model of breast comprising of fat, glandular and muscular tissue has been constructed with a spherical tumor of 2 cm. Further, a closed-loop feedback proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller has been employed at the active tip of electrode to maintain the maximum temperature below 100 °C. The thermo-electric analysis has been performed using a finite element based commercial solver COMSOL Multiphysics®, considering temperature dependent electrical and thermal conductivities along with the non-linear blood perfusion model. The study aims to capture the influence of temporal and spatial heterogeneity of breast tumor blood perfusion on the applied voltage, treatment time, size of ablation volume and temperature distribution during temperature-controlled RFA. Further, the role pharmacologic modulation of tumor blood flow to increase the size of ablation volume produced during temperature-controlled RFA has been discussed. In addition, the effects of vasodilator drug (hydralazine) injection on the efficacy of RFA have been evaluated.
