Following some unlikely accident in a Liquid Metal Fast Breeder Reactor (LMFBR), particles of fuel and steel may be formed and lead to the formation of small or large debris beds on horizontal or non horizontal surfaces. This constitutes the Post Accident Heat Removal (PAHR) situation. For safety reasons, it is necessary to demonstrate that these debris beds can be adequately cooled in order to avoid any vessel melt-through. This can only be achieved by in-pile experiments. The considered modelling of a typical in-pile loop designed by MOL laboratories simulates the following parts of the cylindrical test section :
- the lower heat exchanger;
- the retention plate;
- the debris bed saturated by liquid sodium;
- the upper sodiun layer;
- the upper heat exchanger.
The paper presents the ID and 2D, steady and unsteady, theoretical approaches developed to predict the thermal field in the different components of the system, and up to Na-boiling incipience.
