Experimental Investigation on a Full Scale Thermo-syphon Reboiler

On a thermo-syphon reboiler for turbine gland sealing steam generation in a BWR power plant, measurements were performed in a test loop before commissioning. At different heating and sealing steam pressures the steam production was measured as a function of the virtual water level. The measurements provided detailed information on performance and the limits of stable operation.
The experimental data was used to compare different calculation methods for heat transfer and pressure drop. A computer code was developed for reboiler design. Computed performance curves agree well with the measured data, and also the limits of stable operation, such as dry-out and flooding, are also predictable.
