The aim of this study is to develop guidelines for the Manufacturing of polyurethane insulating foams with low thermal conductivity. To achieve this не have to understand the heat transfer mechanisms in thermal insulations. In this study a physical model has been set up to calculate the heat fluxes in foam slabs by conduction and radiation.
The model allows to search for a foam with a Ion thermal conductivity coefficient by changing Material and other properties of the foam in the physical model. On this basis only the most promising foams have to be Manufactured, in order to investigate the experimentally.
Considering the aims of the investigation, closed cell foams are the most promising, because the gas occluded in the cellular voids can be one with good insulating properties e.g. refrigerant 11 ( CFC13 ) instead of air. The bulk of current thermal insulations consists of closed cell foams. In such a foam, with a low conductive part in the apparent thermal conductivity, the radiative part will become important.
