T1 VORTEX FORMATION NEAR THE GAS/LIQUID/SOLID BOUNDARY OF AN OSCILLATING LIQUID COLUMN JF Journal of Flow Visualization and Image Processing JO JFV YR 1998 FD 1998-03-01 VO 5 IS 1 SP 9 OP 15 AB Vortex formation is observed near the liquid free surface close to the solid wall during the vertical oscillation of a liquid column. A visualization study using dye tracer shows that vortex forms and grows during the downward movement of the interface, and at the same time the newly formed vortex pushes away those previously formed. While the interface moves upward, the shape of the vortex is deformed by the counter movement of the solid surface and the gas/liquid interface. Experiments also indicated that the formation, growth, deformation, and penetration of vortices can significantly increase the local mixing and thus enhance the heat and mass transport processes near the gas/liquid/solid boundary.
