The administration of ethanol-soluble, boiling water-soluble, and ammonium oxalate-insoluble fractions (essentially β-1, 6-D glucose) isolated from the fruiting bodies of Agaricus brasiliensis into C3H/HeN mice resulted in a marked proliferation of cells of multicell lineages in the splenic compartment. Phenotypically increased expression of NK1.1+ on lymphoid cells and histologically increased proliferations of megakaryocytic progenitor cells were seen in the splenic compartment. These results indicate that β-1, 6-D polysaccharides may play a critical role in the maintenance of hematopoietic cells for compromised patients at the risk of infection associated with malignancy.
