WETTABELITY AND CORROSION OF SOME NITRIDE OR ALUMINA CERAMICS BY A Si-Ca TREATED LIQUID STEEL

The wettability and the corrosion of some AlN based or Al2O3 ceramics by a Si-Ca treated liquid steel were studied at 1550°C during one hour. All of the substrates exhibited a non-wetting behaviour. The evolution of the liquid-vapour and solid-liquid interfacial tensions and the work of adhesion show that wetting mechanism is governed by chemical interactions at the solid-liquid and liquid-vapour interfaces. The investigation of these interfaces with SEM and EDAX paint out that:
1) In the case of pure AlN, the corrosion of the substrate takes place by a decomposition of AlN and grain boundary attack.
2) In the case of an AlN-BN mixture, the corrosion is focused over the BN grains which are, from a thermodynamical point of view, less stable than AlN ones.
3) Carbon addition inhibits the corrosion of the substrate through its dissolution in the liquid phase that provides a reducing micro-atmosphere at the solid-liquid interface.
4) In the case of alumina, the corrosion is practically absent.
