VISUALIZATION ON THE INTERACTION BETWEEN JET AND SURFACE IN THE SWELL FLAPPING

New self-induced free-surface oscillations were discovered in a system with a jet, a free surface, and a structure. A submerged upward round jet was injected into a cylindrical tank from an inlet nozzle at the bottom center. The jet impinged on a cylindrical rod (UIS) that was set just beneath the free surface of the tank. Under a certain condition of jet velocity and UIS depth, four kinds of self-induced free surface oscillation were observed, that is, swell flapping, (0,2) sloshing, (1,1) α, and (1,1)β sloshing. The jet was visualized by using a laser light sheet and a luminescent dye. The jet fluctuation and the free surface were clearly visualized. The characteristics of these oscillations were investigated by using the visualized images. In swell flapping and (0,2) sloshing, the separated jet oscillated, whereas the inlet jet oscillated in (1,1) sloshings. In swell flapping and (1,1)α, the streak line of the jet fluctuation had only one node in swell flapping and (1,1)α sloshing and two nodes in (0,2) sloshing and (1,1)β sloshing.
