FABRICATION OF THERMOELECTRIC FOAM AND EVALUATING ASSOCIATED PROPERTIES

Thermoelectric modules with bulk elements are basically designed to extract waste heat from a media to generate electrical power or direct electric energy to a cooler or heater device. Due to the large porosity and high surface area associated with a foam structure compared to its bulk counterpart, an efficient solution to extract waste heat is needed. The goal of this study is to fabricate and characterize thermoelectric foams. An extended search of the scientific literature has revealed no reports on (Bi0.25Sb0.75)2Te3 thermoelectric modules. Porous foams were fabricated as replicas of (Bi0.25Sb0.75)2Te3 and domestic salt powder at different temperatures by using a hot die pressing system. Raw materials were prepared by mechanical alloying and the formations were characterized by differential temperature analysis, x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy systems, and particle size classifications of the powders. The Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity, relative density, thermal conductivity, and the figure of merit of the foams were measured or evaluated by empirical assessment.
