Size reduction and phase modification of HMX (Octahydro-1, 3, 5, 7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine) in a solvent mixture system was performed by ultrasonic waves with 28 kHz frequency. The particle size distribution width of HMX was determined by a laser particle size analyzer (PSA). Their mean diameters were < 7.7 and < 3.1 μm with narrow size distribution width of < 0.7−30 μm and < 0.7−18 μm in Dimethylformamide-H2O (DMF-H2O) and Dimethyl sulfoxide-H2O (DMSO-H2O) systems, respectively. The study of phase modifications of the micronized HMX has been conducted by x-ray diffraction (XRD) spectroscopy, which confirms the formation of suitable β-HMX particles without the other polymorphs. The influence of solvent volume ratio, temperature, and ultrasonic exposure time was studied and optimized for micronization of HMX.
