The combustion and friability behavior of two melt cast explosives, designated MC1 and MC2, are under investigation. The burning rate of the MC1 explosive appears to be controlled by the nitramine contained in the formulation. The second melt cast explosive, MC2, contains a high level of dense inert metal that acts to decrease or quench the burning rates at pressure below 27 MPa and would not sustain combustion at pressures below 6.9 MPa under the conditions of the experiment. Cylindrical samples of the melt cast explosives were impact damaged at velocities from 19.5 to 131.7 m/s. Damage levels in the MC2 explosive were about two orders of magnitude greater than for the MC1 explosive.
