COMBUSTION PERFORMANCE OF TRIPLE-BASE PROPELLANTS AFTER HOT WATER IMMERSIONS

The different ingredients in triple-base propellants have different physical properties, such as their water solubility. The solubility of nitroguanidine is 10.36 g per 100 g water at a temperature of 373.15 K, but the solubility of other ingredients in triple-base propellants is negligible. In this paper, the effects of hot water on triple-base propellants were investigated as a function of time. The combustion performance of these propellants after water immersions was also examined. Immersion in hot water led to the formation of micro-holes in the surface layer, and the depth value range of the immersion layer in the propellant was 50−150 µm after water immersion for different times up to 60 min. Closed-bomb tests indicated that the combustion time decreased as the propellant immersion time increased. Additionally, hot water immersion can also decrease the combustion ignition pressure of the propellants.
