ABSTRACT

In this experimental investigation, three different geometries namely circular, square and triangular cross section wire coils are manufactured and inserted inside the circular tube to enhance the heat transfer rate. Each cross section of wire coil has three different pitches (10, 22 and 33 mm) and 2 mm thick. The effect of all different geometries of wire coils on thermal performance factor, friction factor and heat transfer rate are investigated. Distilled water is used as a working fluid and the Reynolds number varies from 6000 to 18200. Results compared with plain tube without wire coils show that the Nusselt number and friction factor values of circular cross section wire coils are enhanced by 3.75 to 14.54% and 11.4 to 39.22% respectively and maximum for wire coil having 10 mm pitch. Nusselt number increases for triangular and square cross section wire coils from 5.7 to 19.15%. Also, the friction factor increases from 16.75 to 39.46% for triangular and square cross section wire coils respectively. Maximum heat transfer coefficient and friction factor found for square cross section wire coil.
