ABSTRACT

Hot rolled steel sheets are cooled to a desired coiling temperature at a controlled cooling rate in a "Run-Out Table". This is achieved through long ambient air cooling zones with intermittent banks of impinging water jets. For better understanding of the heat transfer phenomena on a "Run-out Table" an experimental set up has been designed and fabricated at IIT Bombay. The setup was designed to perform orthogonal water jet impingement studies on a heated horizontal SS-304 plate. The detailed set up design is discussed. The plate is instrumented at the sub-surface to measure surface temperature at various locations. The temperature versus time plots are obtained. The slope of the curve is a measure of the heat removal rate. The preliminary results for temperature gradient with time is also discussed.
