ABSTRACT

This paper deals with stability behavior of Molten Salt Natural Circulation Loop (MSNCL). MSNCL is setup in BARC with an objective to study the steady state, transient and stability characteristics of molten nitrate salt which is proposed a candidate coolant and storage medium for solar thermal power plant and secondary side coolant for molten salt reactors. The loop has a capability to be operated in four different orientations of heater and cooler viz. HHHC, VHHC, VHVC and HHVC. Steady state and transient experiments have been performed earlierin MSNCL within a range of power from 1200W to 2000W for VHHC orientation. An analytical formulation incorporating local pressure loss has been developed to generate the stability map of MSNCL and generated stability map of VHHC orientation is compared with the experimental data. It has been observed that inclusion of local pressure loss in the formulation significantly improves the theoretical predictions against experimental data. Further, the validated analytical formulation has been utilized to predict stability behaviour of MSNCL for VHVC, HHVC and HHHC orientations.
