ABSTRACT
Flow structure of premixed propane-air and methane-air swirling flames was investigated by means of high-repetition stereoscopic PIV measurements. Weakly swirling flames with a U-shaped front and strongly swirling flames with a quasi-tubular front were studied. The rate of swirl was classified in terms of the absence/presence of stable recirculation zone for the non-reacting flows. Spatial distributions of the time-averaged velocity and Reynolds stresses, calculated on the basis of the instantaneous velocity fields, revealed that the structure of vortex breakdown in the visually similar flames differed dramatically.
