ABSTRACT

The present work is a numerical study of fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics in a two-dimensional parallel-plate channel provided with porous blocks of various shapes. The upper plate is thermally insulated while the blocks, heated from below, are attached on the lower one. To incorporate the viscous and inertia effects, the Brinkman-Forchheimer extended Darcy model is adopted for the flow in the porous regions. The governing equations with the appropriate boundary conditions are solved numerically by the finite volume method. The influence of the porous blocks shape going from the rectangular shape to the triangular one, their height, the porous medium permeability and the thermal conductivity ratio is analysed. The shape of the blocks is varied either by varying their volume and preserving their dimensions, or by varying the blocks height to preserve their volume. The results reveal essentially, that the shape of the blocks may alter substantially the flow structure in the channel, and may enhance the heat transfer under certain circumstances. When the blocks volume is varied, the triangular shape leads to the highest heat transfer rate only at small permeabilities and blocks height and low thermal conductivity ratio, whereas for the other case it is globally the optimal shape whatever the values of the thermo-physical properties of the porous medium.
