ABSTRACT

This paper presents an advanced SIMPLE-like finite volume method for computing fluid flow and conjugate heat transfer on Cartesian cut-cell (unstructured) grids. The method is formulated to solve Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes Equations, for all speed incompressible and compressible flows, and forms the core of Ricardo's VECTIS software. Close attention is paid to the discretization of the energy equation and its implicit solution over fluid-solid interfaces. An efficient numerical technique, suitable for conjugate heat transfer, is proposed for the solution of total enthalpy in terms of temperature. The problem of grid quality, associated with the cut cells, is generalised and approached by the new cell interpolative scheme. This scheme removes poor quality cells from the finite volume formulation. General interpolating functions, valid for both laminar and turbulent flows, are developed in order to provide a solution for these poor quality cells. Where appropriate, the results are compared to published numerical solutions and satisfactory agreement is achieved.
