Abstract

Laminar flow around an unconfined heated square cylinder is considered in the present study. Unsteady two-dimensional Navier-Stokes and energy equations are solved numerically using control volume finite element method adapted to the staggered grid. The computations were performed over a range of Richardson number from 0 to 3 at Reynolds number Re = 150 and Prandtl number Pr = 0.71. The flow is found to be unstable when the Richardson number crosses the critical value of 3. The results are presented to show the effects of the Richardson number on the flow pattern and the heat transfer from the isothermal square cylinder.
