Abstract

The Ricou and Spalding (1961) paper on entrainment in round free jets has become a cornerstone for those who work on free round jets. Since its publication, hundreds of papers have been published, many of which can be traced to this influential paper. And yet, curiously, the statement made in that paper, 'Evidently, the ratio m1/m0 was approximately constant for Reynolds numbers in excess of 2.5×104' has never been, in this author's opinion, explained. The round jet in light of 50 years of research on this subject is explored in this paper. Use of jets operating under the influence of different initial and boundary conditions (tabs, swirl and walls) are used to reinforce the idea that jets are strongly influenced by their initial and boundary conditions. Background on turbulence structure is reviewed. A hypothesis is suggested that may provide an answer to this question. The paper concludes that 50 years on, the round jet remains a useful canonical flow with many remaining features yet to be discovered.
