Abstract

Peutz BV in the Netherlands have developed an improved Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model for the computation of heat and smoke propagation in parking garages and large open spaces in office buildings. It uses a 6-flux radiation model instead of a radiosity model. Reason is that is more closely matches international practise and that it is expected to yield more exact solutions for the different coordinate directions than a radiosity model like the Phoenics Immersol routine. Fortunately it happens to be more stable and to result in faster convergence of the numerical solutions. A combustion model has been applied and has, in combination with the 6-flux radiation model, been validated using literature on physical tunnel model experiments with a kerosene fire conducted by the The Swedish National Testing and Research Institute (SP). They have as well carried out CFD computations, with the software code Fluent. It is studied whether the same results can be obtained with another code and whether this yields new insights. One can draw the conclusion that a proper match between physical experiment and numerical modelling with CFD can be obtained, provided that a combustion model, second order differencing as well as a valid radiation model are applied. As well, some suggestions for further work have been made.
