ABSTRACT

Taylor-Görtler (TG) instabilities in the transitional and turbulent boundary layer along concave walls may occur in technical applications such a the liquid lithium operated target of the IMIF facility and affect there the temperature evolution. The unsteady nature of their occurrence demands a large eddy simulation (LES) technique which is validated in the context presented here by means of two experimental data sets available in literature. The simulations are conducted using the LES Smagorinski Subgrid-Scale (WSG) model. In the first case the development of TG vortices in transitional boundary layer flow with zero pressure gradient have been predicted. In the second case the ability of the WSG model to reproduce TG vortices in accelerated boundary layer flow is investigated. The calculation accuracy has been quantified by comparing both the growth of the vortex system as well as the streamwise evolution of the mean and fluctuating velocity to the experimental data. Thereby a good agreement with the experiments is obtained.
