LES COMPUTATION OF PARTICLE TRANSPORT IN RIB ROUGHENED PASSAGES
ABSTRACT
Large Eddy Simulation (LES) is used to study dilute flow particle deposition in a ribbed channel. For the particles, a Lagrangian approach is adopted. The extension of this from spherical to cylindrical particles is shown. For validation purposes simulations of particle motion in homogeneous, isotropic turbulence, a mixing layer and channel flow are conducted. In this way much of the main flow physics components present in a ribbed duct are separately covered. Ribbed channel calculations are performed for different mass and shaped particles, and gravity directions. Results show that spherical particles tend to accumulate on the vertical rib wall facing the flow direction. The region downstream the rib tends to be particle free. In addition, it is found that lighter particles tend to be trapped in recirculations adjacent to the vertical rib surfaces. Heavier particles tend to deposit or to escape towards the central region of the duct. Cylindrical particles avoid the corner recirculations. Instead, they deposit or move towards the inter-rib central channel region.
