ABSTRACT

The accuracy of different gas radiative property models is studied by comparing their results to a reference line-by-line approach for a planar geometry. The corresponding computational times are compared. The parameters of the four approximate models, i.e. correlated-k (CK), correlated-k fictitious gas (CKFG), statistical narrow-band (SNB) and weighted sum of gray gases (WSGG), have been obtained from the line-by-line approach using the same spectroscopic data base in order to study the intrinsic qualities of each model. The studied medium is a H2O-N2 mixture contained between two isothermal parallel walls. Results are discussed from different points of view: advantages of models expressed in terms of absorption coefficients, ability of models to treat wall reflection, optically thin and thick media, long-range sensing applications, etc. The WSGG model is less time consuming than other models, but is generally characterized by a poor accuracy. The other approximate models are characterized by accuracies depending on the considered conditions. The choice of a model for a given application is discussed.
