ABSTRACT

In order to investigate the radiative and optical properties of combustion aerosols in the visible and near infrared region a new method has been developed. It describes the electromagnetic interaction of the densely packed primary particles within soot agglomerates. Due to the strong absorption of the particles considered, only first order multiple scattering effects are taken into account. Near field effects occurring at very small primary particle distances are taken into consideration by the so-called virtual refractive index allowing a modified Mie formulation of the secondary scattering. Thus, no limitation with respect to the primary particle size is inherent.
The present study is focused on the extinction cross section of strongly absorbing primary particles agglomerated in complex structures. Results obtained by means of the model presented are compared with data taken from literature for primary particles within the Rayleigh regime. The excellent agreement found demonstrates the capability of the model of the virtual refractive index to seize near field interactions. Furthermore, the differential cross sections were calculated for boundary conditions representing a disadvantageous case for the model of first order multiple scattering. Again, a comparison with literature data verifies the assumptions made. Summarizing, the model of the virtual refractive index and first order multiple scattering can be regarded as a suitable tool in calculating the radiative properties of combustion aerosols.
