ABSTRACT

Anyone possessing the rudiments of radiative transfer theory is richly equipped to understand the world of light and color of our everyday lives, from the blue of the sky to the red of sunrises and sunsets, to the variegated appearances of clouds, to atmospheric ice crystal displays, coronas, glories, the green flash, and mirages. What follows is a highly personal and idiosyncratic approach to what can be seen by the human observer. This is based on an invited talk that was accompanied by over 60 slides, most of them in color. For obvious reason, these slides cannot be reproduced here. Rather than agonize over which diagrams might be included, it was decided to eliminate them all. Readers are directed to the references for diagrams and mathematical details.
