Abstract

In order to evaluate the ECCS effectiveness it is necessary to enhance the knowledge of the thermal-hydraulic phenomena occurring during the rewetting of a hot surface and to predict the heat transfer coefficients as a function of the axial position and of the time. The contribution of this paper is to present a mechanistic "local conditions" analytical model and to compare the code RIBFLOW results with experimental data obtained in a bottom flooding loop with a heated 10 mm I.D. 1 m long tubular test section. In the model the heat transfer coefficients based on the local flow conditions provide the boundary conditions for the transient conduction equation solution. Heat transfer correlations are tested and the effect of Weber number is investigated. A quench temperature correlation is proposed. Temperatures and heat flux predicted by the RIBFLOW code are compared with the experimental results.
