ABSTRACT

Safety problems related to clad melting phenomena are reported in this paper. A phenomenological analysis of sodium boiling in relation to clad melting leads to an identification of governing phenomena related to characteristic parameters.
Out of pile simulation experiments are presented and their results are analyzed ; sodium boiling with stainless steel clad melting and relocation experiments have been performed for single channel geometry under different transient conditions. Instrumentation and detection methods are presented. The interpretation of observations and a theoretical analysis are included.
