ABSTRACT

The fundamental aspects of sodium boiling are examined : 1. thermal disequilibrium has been observed experimentally and analyzed, its consequence are examined ; 2. problems related to critical phenomena are presented, experimental results are correlated ; 3. chugging phenomena observations are detailed and an interpretation model is proposed ; the applications of these considerations to sodium boiling detection in a bundle are discussed.
Simplified calculations possibilities for sodium boiling are presented. Important aspects of sodium boiling front propagation, the occurrence of dry out and post dry out temperature rise are examined for the case of slow transients (local boiling, slow flow redistribution) and fast transients (fast excursion and overpower transient). Simplified prediction models are presented. Comparisons are made with experimental results.
