ABSTRACT

An experimental study was undertaken to investigate Reynolds number effects on mixing characteristics and turbulent transport phenomena in the near and intermediate regions of free orifice jets. The cross-sections examined were round, ellipses with aspect ratio 2 and 3. For each orifice cross-section, detailed velocity measurements were made at 4 Reynolds numbers: 2500, 4300, 8500 and 17000 using a particle image velocimetry. The results show different characteristics in the major and minor planes of ellipses with aspect ratio 2 and 3 including spread rate. Also an increase in Reynolds number leads to a narrower jet. Furthermore, the streamwise locations of axis-switching points of both elliptic nozzles are almost independent of Reynolds number not only for half-velocity width but also for the other velocity widths.
