Turbulence dynamics in the separated region of channel flow with a lower curved wall
ABSTRACT
The turbulence dynamics in the separated region of channel flow with a lower curved wall are studied using direct numerical simulations (DNS). Periodic boundary conditions are imposed in both stream-wise and span-wise directions with no slip boundary conditions at the top and bottom walls. Due to the strong inhomogeneity of the flow, it is instrumental to address the mean turbulent kinetic energy. Concerning the turbulent kinetic energy, the production occurs in the separation region behind the bump and feeds the fluctuations downstream both in the near-wall region and in the bulk of the flow. The geometry features are expected to have a significant effect on the overall turbulence dynamics. These will be addressed by means of new innovative data-analysis techniques, such as the generalised Kolmogorov equation which is able to handle anisotropic and spatially non-homogeneous flow configurations.
