ABSTRACT

The excellent capabilities of pin fins to enhance the heat transfer rate have been widely identified in the electronics industry but also in other industrial fields. Therefore, different aspects of such elements have been the object of the investigations of numerous workers. However no final conclusions exist regarding the optimal pin configuration. To remedy this situation, the present authors carried out the study summarized in this paper. The work was carried out with the aim of selecting and optimizing a pin cross-sectional geometry and the arrangements of the pin fins on a heat transfer surface in order to yield the best performance identified here as maximum heat transfer for a certain pressure drop over the pin fin arrays. The optimization of that pin configuration carried out in the present work considered the transverse and stream-wise pin spacing, the inlet fluid velocity and the elliptical axis ratio.
