ABSTRACT

The measurement of heat and mass transfer in liquids is of great importance for process engineering studies. For these studies three-dimensional fields of temperature and concentration have to be measured. These fields are in many cases of nonsteady-state nature. The task is to take measurements of the whole field simultaneously and not to allow this to affect the fluid dynamics of the system.
The optical tomography will be presented here as a measurement technique for nonsteady-steady temperature and concentration fields in laminar and turbulent flows. Some results from previous and present tomography investigations in liquids will be described.
Tomography is normally best known for its use in medical applications. Due to the large development of computer capacity, the number of applications has increased rapidly in all scientific areas of material testing and process engineering [1].
