ABSTRACT

Thermodiffusion experiments involving ternary mixtures need to be conducted in microgravity environments, such as International Space Station, in order to avoid thermo-solutal convection. However due to their long duration, experiments are potentially exposed to vibrating perturbations like reboostings, dockings and extra vehicular activities. To avoid their impact, the actual procedure is simply to stop the experiments when these kind of disturbances are active. To investigate the convenience of this procedure, three-dimensional numerical simulations have been conducted to analyze the effect of real reboosting acceleration signals. The results obtained, show that the accelerations analyzed, are strong enough to promote intense convective motions that significantly perturb the concentration field, even when the acceleration signal has the same intensity as the real one.
