ABSTRACT

The compacting of electronic components has been generating problems in maintaining the systems stable, so a thermal study of electronic equipment is one of the most important aspects of these components, in which is indeed decisive for its reliability. Thermal studies on these components consist of experimental tests and computational simulations that will guarantee that the results satisfy or not the requirements of the product specifications. Telecommunication systems involve, in general, thousands of these components, in which are most of the time stored in a type of cabinets. In these cabinets, a large number of devices dissipate heat altering the behavior of the components. This way, they should understand the temperature fields and the air flow inside these systems for the optimization and maintenance of this kind of system. This study had as objective to determine the fields of temperature, and the air flow inside the central phone cabinets, considering forced convection. Through the analysis of experimental results, alterations and optimizations in the positioning and in the amount of boards, components, fans and blowers, was suggested. With the experimental test using wind tunnel, the dissipated potency can be calculated, and it can be included in the computing simulations to do a simplified modeling of the phone cabinets in the commercial program ANSYS ICEPAK®
