ABSTRACT

Our bibliographic research show that all the studies on that thermomagnetic convection of a ferrofluid are conducted experimentally and numerically in the presence of a uniform magnetic gradient or magnetic field oriented either in the vertical or horizontal direction. To remedy to this, we simulate numerically the stationary natural convection of a magnetic fluid in a square cavity with differentially heated side walls. The ferrofluid layer is submitted to a uniform gradient of an external magnetic field taking different orientations. We investigate the effects of the intensity and orientation of magnetic gradient on heat transfer. We found that these two characteristic influences structure flow and hence heat flux through the cavity. The results show that the Nusselt number reaches it maximums and minimums for a certain optimal angles between directions of temperature gradient and magnetic gradient.
