A FIXED-GRID TWO-PHASE NUMERICAL MODEL FOR CONVECTION DOMINATED SOLIDIFICATION OF THE ALLOY
ABSTRACT
A fixed-grid finite volume numerical approach is developed and used to simulate physical details of convection-dominated melting and solidification problems. This approach is based on the enthalpy-porosity method which traditionally is used to track the motion of the liquid-solid front and to obtain the temperature and velocity profiles in the liquid-phase. The enthalpy-porosity model treats the solid-phase as the porosity in all computational cells that are located on the solid-liquid interfacial boundary.
In this paper the FVM model is presented for coupled fluid flow and heat transfer with solid-liquid phase change phenomena during solidification of alloy inside a cavity. The equations which govern the thermal transfer and the flow are energy and Navier-Stokes equations.
