Performance Optimization of Internally Finned Tubes for Laminar Flow Heat Exchangers

Abstract

A feasibility study was conducted in which the optimized performances of internally finned tubes were compared to smooth tubes for laminar flow heat exchangers. Both straight and spiral fins were examined in four scenarios at the two extreme thermal boundary conditions. In all cases, internally finned tubes were found capable of superior performance, often by a wide margin. Almost consistently, the best finning configurations amounted to a small number of long fins. Results are also included which indicate that substantial exergy savings can be achieved by using finned tubes.
