ABSTRACT

Energy crisis has emphasized the importance of the heat transfer on the performance of the equipment working at low temperature. The use of refrigerating mixtures for refrigeration and multicomponent fluid mixtures liquefaction plants has given rise to the need for accurate experimental data and improved theoretical correlation and prediction method. Heat transfer at low temperature has always been a source of original and difficult problems. Thermal insulation, heat transfer in refrigeration, heat and mass transfer in mixture thermodynamic and thermophysical properties, freezing and melting have been the titles of the special session devoted to the particular problems at the International Symposium held in Dubrovnik on September 1 to 5, 1986, organized by the International Centre for Heat and Mass Transfer.
"Thermal insulation had become a classical subject that was considered by many as already well developed and of concern only to the manufacturing and design engineers. In the meantime, development in aerospace, nuclear, computing, cryogenic and other modern technologies have extended considerably the ordinary temperature range of operation and have presented a great number of formidable engineering problems at the extreme temperature limits. Consequently, the past twenty years have registered an intensive surge of interest in thermal insulation for both high and low temperature application." This statement is from the introduction of Prof. С L. Tien's lecture devoted to the heat transfer in low temperature insulation and indicates to what extent problems relating to low temperature are important to technological development. In this respect this book comprises a number of papers covering a broad scope of different problems relevant to low temperature engineering.
