RESUMO

In Membrane Distillation (MD) modules the knowledge of temperature distributions allows the evaluation of temperature polarization phenomena, thus providing a valuable piece of information for the design of effective channel geometries. Only a few studies have been devoted to the experimental characterization of MD channels and none of them includes data on the local temperature distribution. An experimental technique based on the use of Thermochromic Liquid Crystals (TLCs) along with digital image processing, proposed by the authors in a previous paper [15], was further developed and was adopted in the present work to measure the temperature and local heat transfer coefficient distribution on the membrane surface in a MD channel provided with a net spacer. Both asymmetric and symmetric spacers were tested and different spatial orientations of the symmetric one were also investigated, with the aim of identifying the orientation providing the best promotion of heat transfer and the largest reduction of temperature polarization.
