Natural convection currents in the core are anticipated in the event of the failure of the gas circulator in a prismatic gas-cooled very high temperature reactor (VHTR) The paths that the helium coolant takes in forming natural circulation loops are of interest. In the present study, the potential occurrence of natural circulation is demonstrated using computational fluid dynamic (CFD) calculations with different turbulence models as well as laminar flow. Multiple flow paths for circulating flow are shown for the several cases investigated.
