T1 Diversity of algae in Ukraine JF International Journal on Algae JO IJA YR 1999 FD 1999-06-16 VO 1 IS 2 SP 1 OP 17 AB Generalized data on the species composition and zonal distribution of algae in Ukraine are given. Peculiarities of occurrence and distribution of algae in Ukraine as a whole and in some regions are discussed with reference to certain groups of algae. The algal flora of Ukraine is one of the richest in Europe. At present, it contains 3 708 species (4 823 infraspecific taxa, including those containing nomenclatural types of species) of algae. Distribution of algae in Ukraine is nonuniform. Their diversity varies drastically in different physiographical regions of Ukraine: Forest-Steppe zone - 2 292 species (2 776 infraspecific taxa), Forest zone (Ukrainian Polissya) - 2 007 (2 559), Steppe - 1 844 (2 183); and mountains: the Ukrainian Carpathians - 1 157 (1 405) and Mountain Crimea - 987 (1 193). The basis of the species diversity of algae of Ukraine is formed by representatives of Chlorophyta, Bacillariophyta, Cyanophyta and Euglenophyta (about 87 % of the total species composition).
