This article shows ways of practical performance of three key methods that can be applied to assess the ecological status of small rivers. There are the classification of water quality (here: the aspect of organic load), river habitat assessments and monitoring of organic pollutants. The approach mentioned above was applied to assess the ecological state of small rivers in the territory of the city of Kiev. For the water quality classification, the saprobic indices have been related to reference conditions for sandy lowland rivers. The classification of results of the river habitat assessments was also based on a method usually applied in Germany. To detect organochlorine compounds, the use of the AOC method for first screenings is recommended here. %8 2007-03-23
