Due to the mass development of the alga, the authors had the opportunity to examine in detail the morphological peculiarities of the Israeli population of N. nana, as well as to settle the question of the taxonomic position of this rare species. A detailed description of the studied material is given, and the features confirming its taxonomic status are presented. The paper supplements the original diagnosis of N. nana with new data on its morphological variability, reproduction, and geographical distribution. This is the third record of the species in the world (known also from Austria and the Czech Republic) and the first in Asia. In addition, it is interesting that the species, described from edaphon, has been found in an aquatic habitat, and caused water bloom. Based on an analysis of literature and original data, the authors clearly confirmed the placement of this species into Xanthophyceae. %8 1999-12-18
