RESUMO

The taxonomic composition of diatom assemblages in the Upper Quaternary sediments of the Southern Scotia Sea is studied. In sea-floor deposits a number of species typical for modern plankton associations of this region was revealed. They provide evidence for similarity of the paleoenvironmental and modern conditions of the basin. In the lower stratum of the sediments, valves of more ancient Middle Miocene species occur among diatoms of the Late Quaternary indicating the redeposition that took place in that period. The results of the study of taxonomic composition and ecological structure of the redeposited diatomaceous assemblages are presented, and analysis of the paleoenvironment of the Miocene basin was performed.
