RESUMO

Didymosphenia geminata (Lyngb.) M. Schmidt (Bacillariophyta) is a diatom, which was originally described from the Northern Hemisphere. Recently, a mass development of this species appeared in various, sometimes exotic, regions. D. geminata is a diatom, which produces stalks. Organic material of the stalks, attached to different types of substrates, may strongly affect the surrounding environment as well as animals, plants, and human life. This paper is intended to summarize the information on D. geminata. It is one of the most investigated diatom species in recent years. Nevertheless, little is known about the chemical composition of its cells, as well as its stalk material.
