RESUMO

The paper discusses a methodology of using Phaeodactylum tricornutum Bohl. for biotesting contaminated natural and waste marine waters with changing salinity. It is shown that while studying algal growth indicators within the range of salinity 10-15 o/oo, the laboratory culture of P. tricornutum does not need any preliminary adaptation. In the range of 5-8 o/oo, the cultures are viable, but some preliminary adaptation is required. Fresh water is a short-time "temporary adaptation zone" for P. tricornutum.
