Critical Heat Flux Mechanism on Small Cylinders

RESUMO

Pool boiling experiments are performed to investigate the Critical Heat Flux (CHF) mechanism on small horizontal cylinders ranging in diameter from 11.5 μm to 78.8 μm. Three different test liquids are used, R-113, FC-72 and methanol. Dimensionless CHF data are compared with Sun and Lienhard's prediction (1970) for the three liquids considered. The hydrodynamic CHF mechanism is observed for dimensionless radius values as tow as 0.014. This leads to a modified version of Sun and Lienhard's correlation. The diameter at which the CHF value deviates from Sun and Lienhard's correlation is experimentally identified for each of the test liquids. Conditions for which the CHF deviates from their correlation are governed by boiling incipience phenomenon. A means of predicting the CHF value for these conditions is presented.
