Early Historic Cancer Chemotherapy Work Involving Basidiomycetous Mushrooms
RESUMO
Boletus edulis Bull.: Pers. Fr. and Calvatia (Langermannia) gigantea (Batch: Pers.) Lloyd are two of the first species of basidiomycetous fungi in early cancer chemotherapy that were found to produce antitumor agents during the 1950s and 1960s. The compounds advanced only to the test phase in the treatment of cancer. Various assay methods were developed using cell, tissue, and microbial systems designed to identify potential antitumor agents. New compounds more specific, efficient, and less toxic in the eradication of various cancer forms remain unknown and will be discovered in the future. Cancer treatment may gain much progress from compounds produced by Basidiomycetes. However, much different and more complete cancer therapy and pretreatment unknown today may be common methods of cancer eradication and vaccination for the future.
